On September 28th, 2026, the Columbia University MRSEC published the first research paper from the Center for Advanced Electronic Materials (AEM) in Nano Letters.
This publication, titled "Sliding Disassembly of van der Waals Heterostructures," and the first of many to come from the AEM MRSEC, is co-authored by IRG1 co-lead Aravind Devarakonda, Cory Dean, Abhay Pasupathy and Dmitri Basov, as well as their collaborators and graduate ad postdoc researcnhers.
In this publication, Professor Devarakonda reports a sliding disassembly process that now makes it easy to remove, replace, and more generally reconfigure layers within van der Waals heterostructures. This capability opes the door to new device concepts across the AEM MRSEC, from tunable environments for coherent excitations in IRG1 to reconfigurable moiré and nonequilibrium quantum matter in IRG2.
