Profs. Nuckolls and McDermott have developed a successful four-day materials education module for 5th-6th graders involving literature research and laboratory visits. The School at Columbia (TSCU), a private K-8 with 50% of students admitted by lottery, is a school with ties to the university where we are building a long term collaborative relationship based on the needs of the teachers. Students learned about covalent bonding, lithographic patterning, and basic polymer science with hands-on demonstrations. To reach a larger audience, we will create safe and inexpensive “do-it-at-home” versions of the activities (e.g. “polymer snow” made using sodium polyacrylate in diapers) and downloadable classroom experiments for K-8 teachers.
Program dates: March 7, 2016 – March 11, 2016
